Convening the Movement Building Strategy Group

For all members interested in participating in the Movement Building strategy group, I am taking on convening the group and look forward to supporting this work.

This post from @samnord is really useful to understand the function and position of the strategy group within workers.coop if it’s new to you.

Please be in touch in you would like to be involved.

Hi Nancy,

I’d like to be involved.

Cheers,

Great news Jed! I’ll keep you in the loop.

Posting the movement building mailer and a reminder that we will meet on 2nd July 12-1 pm on Zoom

What’s happening in the Movement Building Strategy Group?

At Worker Co-op Weekend we got together to re-launch the movement building strategy group - this is a report back to our whole membership about the plans we made and how you and your co-op’s members can get involved.

What’s a Strategy Group?

workers.coop has two member-led strategy groups - Co-op Support & Development and Movement Building.

These groups are supported by a paid worker and exist to steer and guide the activity of our enterprise, worker and supporter members in the delivery of the agreed strategic aims for our Federation.

For Movement Building those aims are:

  • Building a grass roots base of worker cooperative organisers and supporters

  • Developing, compiling and disseminating educational and promotional resources to make the system of worker control and worker ownership more relevant and accessible to new workers

  • Participating in national and international cooperative networks and campaigns

  • Making alliances with other social and environmental movements

The Movement Building Strategy group hasn’t convened for a little while, but work among our members towards these four aims is always going on. Convening the group will strengthen all our efforts by bringing them together.

How can you participate?

The session at Worker Co-op Weekend captured ideas and plans for each strategic aim. You can see all the ideas that were generated and discussed here.

Some immediate next steps and pathways to participating:

  • Connection and info sharing:

    • Join a signal group (announcements only via Nancy - group guidelines here) Thanks to Leading Lives and Infinity for their Intranet suggestion!

    • Join a monthly steering group meeting on Zoom for the Movement Building Strategy Group, first Thursday of the month from 2nd July, 12-1pm. We’ll revisit the timing of this group as involvement settles, this is a place to start.

    • Join an All Hands meeting in September (quarterly going forwards) to link with broader activity across workers.coop, including social movement work our members are engaged with alongside worker co-operation.

  • Be in touch if you are attending an event with opportunities to engage more people with worker co-operation, we will support you to represent workers.coop.

  • Be in touch if you are interested in being part of reinvigorating the research group, where we can revisit the data and mapping that exists about our movement and engage with current efforts to improve on and expand the dataset.

Looking forward to bringing together the energy and excitement that all our members have for growing and amplifying worker co-operation in the UK and around the world. If you have any questions or suggestions, please get in touch!

In co-operation,

Nancy
