fundraiser for workers co-op running a venue - it would be great for london worker coops to proactively reach out to these people
Hello!
I’m writing on behalf of the Piehouse Workers Co-Operative, a group of
staff from the former venue Matchstick Piehouse, which unfortunately had
to shut down last year after 5 years of hosting cultural events. After a
lengthy negotiation we have been able to agree heads of terms for a new
lease agreement on the same site (213-214 Edward Street, in Deptford),
and so are going full steam ahead with fundraising in hopes of reopening
the space to the public in February.
We are intending to register as a Community Interest Company, which
would mean that we don’t take any profit from the venue, re-investing
any money that we earn back into operations. Our ethos behind the
project is to create a space that foregrounds our local community in
Deptford, to combat the devastating cultural effects of gentrification,
as well as platforming groups who are usually marginalised by the
inaccessibility of mainstream arts institutions (both literally, through
physically inaccessible spaces/programming, and politically, such as
working-class artists who struggle to fund their practices).
A friend of mine who is currently involved with a housing co-operative
recommended me your website, and I felt like I should get in touch as it
seems that the politics of both of our projects are very aligned. We’re
currently trying to raise as many funds as possible, and were wondering
if we could get any support from you on this? It would also just be nice
to build a working relationship, as you’re the sort of organisation that
we would love to host once we’re open.
Our crowdfunder page can be found at

/ our instagram page is @friendsofthepiehouse. I can also be reached via
whatsapp/telegram/signal on 07459122191 if that’s easier.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this inquiry, and for the
work that you do. The UK desperately needs groups like you!
All the best,
Sonya
