Luton Borough Council are advertising my current role, Community Wealth Building Manager, as I prepare to move home to Scotland to be closer to family and continue my Community Wealth Building journey there. I want to find someone exceptional to take it on. This is a special position, and the town deserves someone who will really lean into it.
A year ago I arrived in Luton and was greeted by a sign the size of a building that has stayed with me: “If you can dream it, you must do it.” I am passionate about Community Wealth Building, so that sign spoke to me.
I will say this plainly. I did not know Luton. I knew its airport and very little else. What I found was a town with a deep story. Red brick terraces, the legacy of hat making, and a history shaped by industry and collective effort.
For me, the worker bee sits at the heart of that story, on the town’s crest. It is a symbol you see in places like Manchester, tied to labour, mutualism and civic pride, and in Luton it carries that same sense of shared work and responsibility.
That story is not without its tensions. Amid anger over exclusion and hardship after WW1, a crowd burned down the original town hall. It speaks to a long relationship between power, people and place, and remains a reminder of who this work is for.
You can still feel traces of that history in how the town approaches change today. What I have found in Luton is a council and partners who are committed to shifting economic ownership closer to the people of the town. It is not simple work. It requires persistence, trust and a willingness to work through complexity.
What has stayed with me most is the people. Officers are thoughtful, determined and open to doing things well. Partners understand their role and are willing to act.
In this role I have had the privilege to develop policy, test ideas and work with others to shape how Community Wealth Building is delivered. I have been trusted to explore, challenge and learn.
This is a chance to step into a position at the centre of Luton’s economic future. You will work across anchor institutions and with procurement, employment, economic development, transformation and social justice to build a fairer local economy. It is a delivery role for someone curious, committed and comfortable working alongside others.
If you are, or know someone who would take this seriously, please share this.
Luton will surprise you, as it did me.
