Transitioning from Big Tech to Ethical Tech - advice, suggestions, ideas please!

media co-op has an opportunity to apply for some funding to make our dream come true to free ourselves of Big Tech and move entirely to ethical open source platforms and tools. We’re currently looking for a tech partner (or partners) for this project - ideally a CoTech member.

We want to be a demonstration model for Third Sector organisations and show that it is possible to make the transition - once we’ve done it! and encourage uptake - perhaps with a suite that other organisations, established and start-up, can easily adopt.

Deadline 31 Oct 2026.

We’d like to hear from anyone who has made this move, what the challenges were / are etc.

The member of our co-op leading on this is Susie@mediaco-op.net

Please DM her if you have thoughts, advice, recommendations etc

Give a shout to Autonomic Co-op.

A couple of years ago, I explicitly asked them to work on this for me, as one project partner was solely using the Google techstack as their provider of remote systems, and, I wanted to reduce their exposure to the “monoculture” effects of using Big Tech.

They did this really well.

They also run the Co-op Cloud Project:

@louise I see you use GMail for email:

30 alt2.aspmx.l.google.com.

Is it GMail and GSuite that you are looking at migrating away from?

You have used the alternatives Webarchitects offers, Mailcow, Nextcloud and ONLYOFFICE, if these tools would be suitable then Webarchitects would be happy to quote for the provision of these services, contact us via support@webarcitects.coop.

Incidently wouldn’t this be better posted to the CoTech Job Board?
